After two years of planning, collaboration, and curriculum development, Whatcom Family Farmers – Education (WFF-E) successfully piloted the Whatcom Farm Circle (WFC) Dairy Curriculum. Designed around third and fourth grade learning standards, this curriculum gives students a deeper understanding of dairy farming in Whatcom County and the important role it plays in our community.
This spring, six classrooms that participated in our annual Whatcom Farm Circle field trip last November took part in three interactive dairy lessons, and several classes also visited a local dairy farm. Students explored topics including cow comfort, Washington’s climate and its impact on milk production, and the journey of milk from cow to carton.

They applied what they learned during their farm visit by asking thoughtful questions and making connections to real-world dairy practices. Their excitement was evident throughout the experience, with meeting newborn calves and touring the milking parlor among the favorite parts of the farm tour.

We would like to extend thanks to the DeJong family at Eaglemill Dairy for hosting the farm tours, Dairy West and Washington Ag in the Classroom for partnering on curriculum development, and the Whatcom County Dairy Ambassadors for bringing the lessons to life in the classroom.
As we prepare for the 11th annual WFC field trip this fall, we’re excited to begin piloting a Whatcom Raspberry Curriculum. Continued support from our community is needed to make these opportunities possible. We invite you to visit our website to learn how you can volunteer, sponsor, or participate in helping inspire the next generation in agriculture education.
Thank you to our curriculum partners!
