There is truly something special about being part of a new project, activity, or event. For over 400 high school students, a new event at Lynden High School opened a door to new opportunities. With collaboration from the Career Center at Lynden High School, local agriculture teachers, eager community members and business owners, and representatives from CHS Northwest, on Friday, April 26th, 2024 Whatcom Family Farmers hosted the first annual Whatcom Agriculture Career Fair in the Lynden High School gym. CHS served as the Title Sponsor for this event with Ebe Farms and Skagit Farmers Supply as Gold Sponsors.

Students from Blaine, Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Lynden Christian, Mount Baker, and Mount Vernon Christian experienced a gym-full of agricultural businesses giving their “sales pitch” and recruiting for future work opportunities. With a riveting game of bingo as an ice-breaker to meet business owners and local farmers, and plenty of swag to go around, it was certainly a day of education, networking, and fun.

With the pilot of this new annual event, a space was created for students to not only learn about agriculture career opportunities in Whatcom County, but also to network with places that are hiring now or in the future. While many of these students may not go into agriculture careers, the other goal of this event and of WFF-Education was certainly accomplished: to expose students to the people who grow and support the growth of their food.

One business owner who attended the event agreed with this and continued on to say that the opportunity to connect with other local businesses was also a rewarding part. “Engaging high school students interested in careers and networking with other local businesses was a successful component of the event.” he said. In fact, all the businesses who attended look forward to participating again next year. For anyone interested in this event, we are setting a date for late January or early to mid February in the hopes to include even more businesses, schools, and supporters. Keep an eye out for a Save the Date soon!

All of us at Whatcom Family Farmers would like to thank and recognize the businesses who attended and the generous sponsors and supporters who helped to make this event happen. As we look to the future, we see that it is bright! The careers in agriculture within Whatcom County are plentiful and bound to be filled with young people who have a passion for agriculture.
